Bug guide
Black widows are one of the most common spiders around Phoenix Valley homes. They are shy and rarely bite, but they build their webs in areas we are likely to reach into: between items in the garage, in cracks on the block wall and on patio furniture or items stored against the house. Here is how they get in, what attracts them, and what you can do about it.
Garage corners and block walls
Most live just outside, close to the house. Black widows build webs low to the ground along the foundation, then wander in through gaps under garage doors, around windows and through vents.
They are also carried in on items that have been sitting outdoors or in storage, such as boxes, firewood, potted plants and patio cushions.
Shelter and prey. Black widows look for dark, dry, undisturbed spots close to the ground, and they stay where insects are easy to catch.
Cluttered garages, block wall gaps, meter boxes and pool equipment give them shelter, while porch lights draw in the insects they feed on.
Reduce the places they can hide and the food that keeps them around. Regular cleanup and a few simple habits go a long way.
Bites are uncommon, but they can cause pain, muscle cramps and nausea. If you think you have been bitten, contact a medical professional or Poison Control.
